AN INTERVIEW WITH THE

LA FASHION DISTRICT BID

INSIGHTS AND UPDATES FROM THE CORNERSTONE OF OUR LA FASHION DISTRICT COMMUNITY

We chatted with our friends at the LA Fashion District BID office about the inspiring activity taking place within our community and by our community during this time, as well how we can help support our small businesses and keep connected to all things living and working in our beloved Fashion District.

We LOVE SEEING HOW la fashion district businesses have pivoted to help the community. whose recent activities particularly stand out?

Many of the small businesses in the LA Fashion District are doing everything they can in order to remain open and continue to serve the community, We’ve seen most of the restaurants transition to curbside pickup models, and some – like Poppy & Rose – are now operating as mini neighborhood markets, where you can purchase grocery items in addition to your favorite brunch item.

The most impressive pivots we’ve seen are amongst the designers and manufacturers here in the district. What Michael Costello is doing is amazing and it happened so quickly – he and his entire team transitioned from making one-of-a-kind celebrity red carpet looks to making protective masks for essential workers. They’re not only selling the masks, but they’ve donated thousands of them to local hospitals, medical workers, and other essential businesses and workers.

Our office has also made a dozen or so connections between manufacturers and hospitals and/or medical centers that need PPE items. We couldn’t be more proud of the designers and manufacturers here that have stepped up to provide these essential items to protect our frontline workers during this pandemic.

We’re also coordinating with the Mayor’s Office on the Emergency Senior Meals Response Program, connecting eligible LA Fashion District restaurants who qualify to prepare meals for this program.

HOW CAN WE AS A COMMUNITY HELP SUPPORT Fashion District area small businesses during this time?

In a nutshell, eat and shop local!

We put together a list of how you can continue to Support LA Fashion District Businesses and have curated updated Dining and Retail directories featuring businesses that are still open and operating. We’re hoping to continue adding to both of these directories as some restrictions begin to lift.

any special deals or promotions being offered by these small businesses that you are aware of?

We’re not seeing many deals and promotions being offered, which is totally understandable given the financial burden many of the small businesses are currently facing. However, we are seeing some really creative offerings from some of our local restaurants. Rossoblu, for example, is currently offering 7-Course Weekend Meals for just $49 and Cook At-Home Kits.

DO YOU HAVE A RECOMMENDATION FOR A LAST MINUTE MOTHER’S DAY GIFT WE CAN PURCHASE THAT ALSO SUPPORTS A FASHION DISTRICT BUSINESS?

Flowers, flowers, flowers! Or plants!

As you know, a key component of the LA Fashion District’s DNA is the Flower District. Up to this point, they’ve been unable to operate. However, the main flower markets, including the Original Los Angeles Flower Market, the Southern California Flower Market, and the California Flower Mall, have begun operating and have curbside pickup options available this week for Mother’s Day.

“LET’S PAINT THE TOWN” ARTIST MURALS AT WEST ELM @ARTSHARE_LA

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS OUR residential community is CREATIVELY CONNECTING DURING THIS TIME?

Art Share LA recently teamed up with local street artists from DTLA to launch “Let’s Paint the Town” in response to the impact the coronavirus has had on the LA art community, which is very prevalent in the LA Fashion District. A piece of this amazing campaign can be seen on the boarded up glass of West Elm on Broadway. The plywood has transformed into 6 amazing murals, featuring the work of local artists.

Also, the “8pm Applause” has really caught on among the downtown residential community. It’s something that they look forward to every evening and is a nice way to acknowledge our essential workers. We’ve also heard it can be quite therapeutic to yell from your window or balcony during this time.

ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR STAYING POSITIVE AND CONNECTED to our fashion district community DURING THIS TIME?

We are encouraging the community to participate in our #MyLAFashionDistrict campaign, which is designed to bring some happy thoughts and good memories -- as well as things to look forward to – to our social feeds. We’ve been sharing these posts on our IG feed.
